We would like to inform you that the REACH Consortium decided that Cobalt (2-ethylhexanoate), (Cobalt Octoate) will be reclassified from Cat. 2 toxic for reproduction (CMR) to Cat. 1B as of the first of November 2018. The new classification leads to labelling “May damage fertility. May damage the unborn child“. Mixtures containing ≥ 0,3 % Cobalt Octoate, and ECO labeled products containing> 0,01% must be labeled accordingly. In the long term Cobalt Octoate could be included to the CLP Annex IV, which would stop any further use in consumer products.
As a resolution to this reclassification of Cobalt Octoate, PERGAN is introducing a new product line. PERGAQUICK CP…, a Cobalt polymer compound:
Cobalt metal has been an established accelerator for Ketone peroxide based cold curing systems for decades in the market. In the polymeric form it is bound in a polymer matrix with high molecular weight. This decreases its bioavailability, yet safeguards its curing performance. A further advantage of the cobalt polymer is its exemption from being registered according to REACh.
Our cobalt polymer accelerators can replace the classic Cobalt Octoate accelerators (for example our PERGAQUICK C… product line) 1:1, based on metal/resin ratio. This has been proven by a 6 month long-term study. More than several hundred curing tests have been carried out with various Ketone peroxides (MEKP, AAP, CHP), as well as various marketable and unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins.
A great advantage of PERGAQUICK CP11, CP12 X or CP24 AX is that no dosage adjustment will be necessary. Only for PERGAQUICK CP40 (4% Cobalt metal) needs the dosage a conversion with a factor 2.5 compared to PERGAQUICK C100 (10% Cobalt metal). Other Cobalt polymer formulations are available upon request.
We strongly recommend to approve the new products based on your own laboratory and operational tests. Samples are available in the next future upon request.
